August showed us once again the impact of youth programming—full of connection, culture, and community fun. Here are some moments from the month that we’re excited to highlight.

Skate Camp Success!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support our 2nd Annual Skate Camp! We had over 40 youth join us from across the county, making it an incredible two-day event. For some, it was their very first time stepping on a skateboard, while others showed off their growing skills.

Special shoutout to our skateboarding mentor, Charlie Caldwell from @humboldtskateparkcollective, for bringing out boards, helmets, and—most importantly—his passion and wisdom for skating. His guidance helped create an inspiring and safe space for our youth to learn, connect, and have fun.

We’re already looking forward to hosting more events like this that bring our community together in healthy, exciting ways!

Orleans Summer Program Recap

Ayukîi! Our Orleans summer program was packed with adventure, learning, and community fun. Youth got creative with crafts, hit the trails mountain biking with @mbttabikeclub, tried out skateboarding with Charlie Caldwell, played sports, and spent plenty of time soaking up the sunshine beachside.

A big Yôotva (thank you in Karuk) to Roseanne Richardson and the Karuk Education Department for bringing their incredible Math and Science Camp to us. From solar ovens and medical career exploration to water slides and a magical science show, the kids had a blast learning and exploring.

Another heartfelt Yôotva to the Gensaw family for teaching youth how to cut up áama (salmon) and prepare it on sticks—the highlight of what turned into the best river day ever!

Big shout out and thank you to Charlie Caldwell and @humboldtskateparkcollective for gifting our young Orleans skaters with brand new boards.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Pánamniik (Orleans) this summer to help beat the heat and create memories together.

Youth Ambassadors Giving Back!

Youth Ambassadors dedicated their time to supporting elders in our community. Each group pitched in by helping with yard work and baking delicious treats to share. The youth not only gave back in meaningful ways, but also felt a deep sense of pride in the positive difference they were making. The smiles from our elders said it all—and our Youth Ambassadors definitely felt the love in return.

Two Feathers’ Youth Ambassadors proudly represented the community at the Hupa Valley Tribe’s Sovereigns Day celebration! Sporting their fresh new swag, the group joined the festivities, helped run the bounce houses, and shared their energy with family and friends.

The Ambassadors’ creativity and teamwork stood out in the annual parade, where their float earned 3rd place among this year’s entries. Beyond the competition, the youth spent the day supporting the Hoopa Tribe’s Sovereigns Day traditions, celebrating sovereignty, culture, and community.

Summer Outreach Interns Learn Traditional Salmon Cooking

Three young adults work on smoked salmon

This summer, Outreach Interns rolled up their sleeves to take part in a hands-on cultural lesson—catching, processing, and smoking salmon. Guided by mentors, the interns learned every step of the process, from preparing the fish to carefully hanging the filets over the fire.

The experience not only deepened their understanding of traditional foodways but also highlighted the importance of carrying forward practices that have sustained Native families for generations. The smell of woodsmoke and salmon filled the air as the rest of the Two Feather’s staff waited patiently to try some!

Mad River Steelhead Survey

As part of their summer program, Outreach Interns took to the waters of the Mad River to help with the annual Steelhead Survey. Equipped with snorkels and guided by experienced mentors, the interns dove the river to observe and count fish.

The survey not only provided valuable data on the health of local steelhead populations but also gave the interns a unique opportunity to connect with the river and learn about the importance of protecting its ecosystems. Their efforts highlight the next generation’s role in sustaining cultural and environmental stewardship.

Young Bucks Gather for Summer 2025 Programming

This summer, the Young Bucks program brought together young men each week for cultural activities, mentorship, and fun bonding experiences. From learning traditional skills to spending time outdoors and building friendships, the gatherings created space for growth, laughter, and connection.

Through these shared experiences, the Young Bucks strengthened not only their own sense of identity but also their relationships with one another and the community. The summer of 2025 was filled with memorable moments that will carry forward into the year ahead.
